I committed a crime!!!!

When I was growing up I took a typing class in jr high and I was taught to use two spaces after a period.  Well I was never great at typing, because I could never do well without looking at the keys.  But the two space rule is one that I followed religiously.  Now after almost 30 years I am finding out I am wrong (and some of you know how I hate to be wrong 🙂 ).

According to an article I read on Slate.com I need to use only one space to be correct. Apparently the two space rule was just for manual typewriters in the  early to mid 1900’s, because they used the same spacing for each letter. By the time I did my class we used electric typewriters and they adjust the spacing based on the width of a letter. It feel weird only adding one space, but I am going to try and adjust to “modern” conventions.  🙂

What are your thoughts on the matter? What do you do and how were you taught? Did you notice I used two spaces until I mentioned the article and one after?

    Victor,
I always appreciate comments on my post and you are one of the most active. It would be great to see you guys when you are on island. It would also be great to have you guys aboard for another charter. TTYL. Shane

Silly that I respond to such a trivial topic on a sailing website, but I too was taught the two space rule (mid-1970’s) and still use it to this day. Can an old dog change his ways? Probably not.
Best of luck on your upcoming cruise season. We have friends who will be running day sails out of Caneel with Captain Greg in the near future. Hopefully we will visist them next year. If in the area, we’ll give you a ring for a dinner rendezvous.
