American Hill

View of Francis and Maho Bay

Last week I hike up American Hill on St John. This trail is a spur off the Cinnamon Bay Trail, but is no longer on the NPS trail map. They are afraid  someone will get hurt at the great house at the top of the hill, so if you want to go take the left after you have hiked .3-.4 miles up the trail. It is another half mile or so up, but the view is so worth the effort.

When you get to the great house enjoy poking around the ruins, but the best thing is the view of Francis and Maho Bay. You have to stand on the arched wall of the crumbling cistern to see over the trees and brush, but check out that view. From this angle you can see the different depths of the bays and all the boats moored here.

Now who else has done this hike? What other lesser know hikes do you recommend on St John?
