Would you consider eating beaver meat?

I was told to eat at Lokys down in the Old Town of Vilnius if I wanted to try ancient traditional Lithuanian meals that are spectacular. This had my attention and one night for dinner I found myself sitting the courtyard eating beaver stew and having a glass of mead.

Lokys was started in 1972 (a good year indeed 🙂 ) in a former merchants shop and house built at the end of the 15th century. It is situated on the narrow Stikliu Street in the old town of Vilnius, which housed merchants and craftsmen invited to the city by the Lithuanian Grand Duke. Over the centuries, the gothic cellars have been used as shops, taverns, and breweries.

While the patio was nice with the pleasant weather, it was the restaurant seating in the cellar I found amazing with all the brick and wood. Very romantic and the tiny stairs make you think you are entering a forbidden place.

The menu is full of many game dishes that date from the 15th through the 19th centuries, but it was the beaver that I was there to try. The chef did an amazing job and the gravy it came in was delicious. I have to admit I am not sure I would be able to tell it was not beef if I was not told otherwise.

Mead is something I have heard about since high school English class when we discussed medieval literature, but I have never tried. It is made similar to beer except honey is the main ingrediant. I am not really sure what I expected, but it was a clear yellow color and tasted like a sweet wine.

Talk about an experience. Lokys provided me the opportunity to try two things I have never had before. On top of that, the staff was excellent and the building historical.
