The rise of the Greek city-states started around 1200BC and brought a centuries long Golden Age to the region. During this time colonies spread to Italy, Turkey, and other parts of the Mediterranean. The legacy of Greek Civilization during this time period made a major impact on the world and continues to influence western society to this day.
In the 4th century BC Alexander the Great united all of Greece and proceeded eastward forming one of the largest empires the world has ever seen, but it did not last past his death. The growing Roman Empire absorbed much of the old empire and was heavily influenced by the Greek culture. When the Roman Empire split Greece was influenced by the eastern half, which became the Byzantine Empire. Greece stayed under Byzantine rule until it fell to the growing Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, but was still able to maintain its Greek-speaking Christian culture.

On March 25, 1821 the Greek Revolution broke out and led to a long war against the Ottoman Empire for independence, which it achieved in 1829.
My Visit
In 2019 during my road trip along the Aegean Coast in Turkey we took a couple ferries to the Greek islands of Kos (day trip) and Rhodes (overnight).
