Lithuania - Trakai Island castle

Lithuania - Trakai Island Castle 1Trakai Island Castle is an island castle located in Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430. Trakai was one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

Lithuania - Trakai Island Castle 2How could you not want to visit a castle, much less one on an island? Sounds like a fairy tale to me. The tour of the castle is informative as you walk around the two story, roughly triangle shaped fort that provides the only access to the three story square palace.

Lithuania - Trakai Island Castle 4But the best part of visiting Trakai Island Castle is renting a boat and my friend and I chose a paddle boat you power with your legs. We paddled all around the castle and loved every minute of it. I can just imaging, if you take away all the other boaters and add some fog, how fairy tale this castle would really look.

What an experience!!!
