The Goreme Open Air Museum is a valley in the Cappadocia area of Turkey (next to a city of the same name). It contains the remains of a Christian society escaping persecution from the Roman Empire during the 1st through 3rd centuries. There must be a dozen churches in the open air museum and that is not including the convent, monk dorms, kitchens, and other support buildings. Of course in true Cappadocian style, all of these buildings are actually carved into the soft rock in the canyon.
The best part about this location outside of the amazing feat of having the buildings carved into the rock is that many of the churches contain fantastically preserved fresco painting on the walls and ceilings. These frescos are within the numerous churches and we spent 20 minutes alone in the “Dark” church admiring each piece of religious artwork. The entire interior of the church is covered, so each scene works by itself and joins the rest to tell the biblical story.
Because of these well-preserved churches and other buildings carved into the rock, this entire site was placed on the World Heritage List in 1985. It is one of the must-see places in the Cappadocia area and helps put all the rock carved building into your grasp as you explore each and every one of them.
