What does it take to drive around Iceland?

By August 30, 2016 No Comments

Most visitors to Iceland spend time walking around the capital, Reykjavik, do whale watching and puffin watching bout rides, and take a tour or two around the Golden Circle. While all of this is enjoyable and you will see a lot, you will not venture more than 100 miles around this country and be saddled with someone else’s schedule.

Me personally, I think the only way to really see Iceland is to travel around the entire island and the best way to do this is to rent a car and go. Of course you can try and save money by hitchhiking or you can be an Iron Man and bicycle, but let me tell you when that when it rains every other day and you see those people waiting for a ride or huffing down the road all you can think is “those poor, cold, wet souls” and “thank goodness I am dry and warm in this car”.

Driving in Iceland is super easy. You don’t even need a 4×4, because a regular car will do just fine. This is because all the beautiful and unbelievable sights are on the Ring Road, which is a paved road that circles the island on a plain area. You will have cliffs on one side and ocean on the other.

The only time you need a 4×4 vehicle is to visit the interior called the Highlands, but you can always take a tour or ride the bus ($150 round trip) to go up there. Although I think that by driving all the way around the island and seeing all the amazing sights you will get a real feel for Iceland and the Highlands are what you have seen, but rougher and less traveled. Of course there are going to be those people that totally disagree with me, but for most people a road trip in a regular car all the way around the Ring Road will be EXACTLY what they are looking for.

One thing I will caution you about is don’t try and do it in too few of days. I think the 9-day trip Eric and I took is perfect. We did not feel rushed at all and could move at our own pace, but at the same time we saw 3-5 things a day and seem to always be going later than we expected. I also can not tell you how useful the wi-fi package teh car company offered us for around $75 was. It was invaluable.
