A gyrocopter tour sounds amazing

As your read yesterday, I was anchored in Grand Case on the French side of St Martin. The bay is beautiful, the food wonderful, and the experience fantastic. That is when I saw an ad to take a 30 minute gyrocopter tour around the northern part of the island with SMX Gyrocopter.

What? You don’t know what a gyrocopter is? Well it is a type of rotorcraft that uses an unpowered rotor in free autorotation to develop lift. Forward thrust is provided independently, typically by an engine-driven propeller. While similar to a helicopter rotor in appearance, the autogyro’s rotor must have air flowing across the rotor disc to generate rotation, and the air flows upwards through the rotor disc rather than down.

I mean how awesome would that be to fly in a type of tiny helicopter and look down into the shallow waters surrounding St Martin? That is what I thought when I booked a tour through their website four hours before I walked the three blocks or so to the small French airport. As I walked in I found nothing indicating where I should go or that anyone was waiting for me. I finally asked the very nice guy at the Info Booth and he called the owner of the company (who happened to be his friend). That is when I found out they never looked at the reservation. I asked when we could do it and I was told once the pilot was back on island he would call me. For the next two weeks I tried sending e-mails and calling the number on the website. All with no response. Island time strikes again. Haha

Apparently not all adventures are meant to be. I never heard back from them and finally had charters taking me away from St Martin. I would have loved to experienced the tour, give you a great story, and review, but the best I can really say is hopefully you have better luck trying to give SMX Gyrocopter money than I did.
