Salt Pond Bay on St John

Salt Pond Bay is on the south coast of St John and is a bay on the western side of the Rams Head peninsula.  This is my favorite anchorage in the entire Virgin Islands, because of everything there is to do and how quite and uncrowded it is.  On the south side of St John you are not allowed to anchor and have to take a $15 mooring ball.  Since there are only 5 moorings available this bay never gets to crowded.

When you get here you can snorkel the edge of the bay or a group of rocks in the middle of the bay.  The hike out to Rams Head is a moderate to difficult hike and offers a fantastic view of St John and sometime St Croix.  The landscape is drier than elsewhere so you get a different set of plant life with turks head cactus a plenty.  After you complete this one mile hike you can also take the quarter mile hike to Drunk Bay and check out all the artwork people have done with coral, coconuts, and other things on the beach.

In my opinion this beach is as good as any on St John without the crowd.  Most of the people here are stay at the Concordia Eco Resort and are a quiet and simple type of people.  Plus if you need any staples they may have it at the little resort store.  In the mornings a pack of wild donkeys sometimes wonder the beach, so keep a look out for them.

Just writing about this wonderful bay make me want to get back and see it again!!!!

    Carina,

Thank you so much for the kind words.

Maybe if you come back down you might be interested in seeing some more islands aboard a catamaran.

    Hi Shane!
I enjoy your weekly blog and this weeks definitely hit a chord with me. In January, we visited St. John for my sister’s 40th and hiked the Reef Bay Trail over to Lameshur Bay Trail and on across to Salt Pond. It was only six miles (but that distance doesn’t take into account the inclines!) Anyway, it was our favorite place in St. John as well, and we ended up heading over there four times from Contant during our week long stay. Wishing you the best, and continued success.
