Sailing is certainly a unique choice of activity whilst you travel. It’s tranquil and quiet – and serves as a perhaps necessary escape of everyday life. Here are just five reasons why you should try it on your next getaway.

No matter where you learn to sail, the beauty of it is that once you’ve gotten to grips with it, you can then do it anywhere. Sailing is one of the most popular hobbies around the world, and with so many gorgeous, desirable destinations for it, learning to sail could actually inspire you for future trips abroad.

Although it may take you a while to really master the art of sailing, remember there isn’t any rush – and once you get a taste for it, you’ll more than likely be motivated to carry on so that you can eventually take to the open seas and explore of your own accord.

It’s a unique activity

Travelling is a time for people to try new and exciting things, but you often hear of the same old – bungee-jumping, kayaking and especially diving, as recommended by 1Cover. Being able to return home and say you tried a spot of sailing is something very unique, and will have those you talk to asking plenty of questions about the experience.

It always feels good to try something different from the norm, and sailing is arguably one of those activities that goes mostly ignored by fellow travellers. Try your hand at it and you could end up being the inspiration for those who hear your stories and eventually try sailing themselves.

Sailing the sea is an incredible experience

There’s something about sailing upon an open sea that no other experience can compare to. It’s freeing and relaxing all at once, and it’s something you’ll never forget – seeing the shoreline drift further away is one of the most peaceful feelings you’ll likely ever have.

Of course, it’s crucial you’re staying safe. Sailing can potentially be dangerous if you don’t follow safety precautions. Be sure to research the conditions of the waters before you head out, so you don’t find yourself in a risky situation.

It’s a great way to relax

As echoed by the Huffington Post, the ocean does wonders for your mental health – sailing away from the noise and the troubles of the mainland and being left with the peace and quiet of the ocean is a great way to unwind and clear your head.

Living by the ocean is said to have massive benefits for your health. Mathew White, an environmental psychologist at Exeter, says to the Huffington Post that moving closer to the sea “significantly improves people’s well-being” – but if a permanent relocation isn’t on the cards, sailing is arguably the next best thing.

It’ll make you appreciate natural beauty

Often with travelling, people are too distracted by crowds, phones and trying to get the perfect snap to really take in their surroundings. Removing yourself from the bustle of the mainland by sailing out upon the seas will allow you to take in the beauty of nature without distraction. Put your phone down and look around – the world is truly beautiful, and sailing is one of the most effective ways of realising it.
