Port of Spain is located on the Gulf of Paria, on the northwest coast of the island of Trinidad, and has a metropolitan population of over 80,000, but the transient daily population grows to over 250,000. It is part of a larger population area stretching from Chaguaramas in the west to Arima in the east with an estimated population of 600,000.

Although not the largest town in Trinidad, it has been the capital since 1757 and Port of Spain is a great place to spend a couple of days with plenty to see and do for at least a day if not 2-3. Plus, it is the hub for Trinidad’s famous carnival, which many consider to be one of the top two in the world.

Some of the highlights of the city include:

Emperor Valley Zoo – It has over 2300 animals and was established in 1952. I will talk more about it on Thursday

Royal Botanic Gardens – It was established in 1818 and I will write more about it on Sunday

The Magnificent Seven – I will discuss these seven beautiful building next Tuesday

Queen’s Park Savannah – A large park in the middle of the city with a circumference of 3.5 km and is a popular spot around sunset for joggers and walkers

Main shopping area is on Frederick Street and Charlotte Street between Independence Square (Brian Lara Promenade) and Park Street. Here you will find stores and stalls selling everything you might want

Independence Square – Wandering along in the evening is a great way to get a feel for Trinidad

If you to Trinidad by boat, then you probably have it anchored or dry docked in Chaguaramas. The good news is there is a great bus system that will take you into town to the main terminal and everything is within walking distance or a short cab ride.

    Anthony,

You are from a very exciting country. I am pretty good as far as needing history, but it was cool hearing about all the actors and I bet the photos you have are amazing! Have you checked out my travel videos for Trinidad and Tobago? You can find them on the website under the travel guide and travel video sections. I hope you enjoy them.

I am based in Winnipeg Canada, originally from Couva Trinidad. If you need more history on Trinidad and Tobago in particular from the 1920’s to present day, drop me a line, I have black and photos of American soldiers stationed in Trinidad in the 2nd World War, and a lot more. I copies of Hollywood movie stars on location here, Jack Lemmon, Rita Heywood, Robert Mitcham etc…
