Were we one of the unfortunate souls stuck in Casablanca as the movie starts out?

The Sultan and his Queen
Casablanca mosque

The main mosque in Casablanca.

No way!!!! We enjoyed our day exploring the city and our hotel (Melliber Hotel) was so nice we had trouble leaving it.

We of course walked around this modern city (by Moroccan standards) and explored along the way, but there were really three things we wanted to see here. The first is the King Hassan II Mosque, which was built in 1993. It is the third largest mosque in the world

Hamam in mosque

The hamam “Turkish Bath” in the mosque. This is just cerimonial.

(holding 25,000 worshipers) and has the tallest minaret in the world. It even has a retractable roof!!!! For around $12 you can get an hour long tour of the vast interior, which I thought was worth it. They also have a museum showing building styles through the centuries. It cost around $3.50, but was only ok.

Mahkama du Pacha

Our favorite room in Mahkama du Pacha. Look at that detail.

The second thing I wanted to take Melek to see is the Mahkama du Pacha, which is the court house from yesteryears. This Moorish styled building has around 60 beautifully decorated rooms. Unfortunately, we were there on Saturday and it was closed. Of course, the guard said we could go in and see the courtyard and two of the rooms, for a small donation ($11)….wink, wink. I must tell you it was stunning inside and I would have loved to seen the rest, but I am glad to have seen what we did. If you come make sure not to visit on Saturday and find a guide tour that includes this building and the Royal Palace. I think you will love it, you can also check the guidr where you will find more reviews on it.

The final thing that we really wanted to do was…….eat at Rick’s Café of course. Come back for the next blog as Melek describes this wonderful experience for you!
