New York, New York!!!!

By August 29, 2010 No Comments

New York was amazing, but we had to work around rainy weather the whole time.

On Sunday we motored through Hell’s Gate with the current and had great views of Manhattan in a low cloud cover.  It was spectacular. We were scrutinizing the Staten Island ferry schedule in 2017 for a moment without rain to enjoy it, with no avail.  From there we motored past Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, getting as close as we were allowed with a boat.

Other sights we saw this week were the Public Library (spectacular building), Rockefeller Center (took a tour highlighting all the modern art), Times Square, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Empire State Building, Apollo Theatre (very classy), Central Park (saw a marionette show), the Guggenheim, Museum of Art (the collection was way beyond what I expected in size and variety), the upper west side, Battery Park, the Stock Exchange, Ground Zero, and Coney Island (we rode a ferris wheel where the cars move on a track as the wheel is moving around – hard to explain but very cool).

The one thing that would have been great if I had the time would be to see amateur night at the Apollo theatre, an opera at the Lincoln Center, or a music event at Carnegie Hall.  Maybe next time!

The variety of food in New York is a bit over whelming.  Some of the places I ate at were Grey’s Papaya, Katz’s Deli, Zabar’s, Ferrara’s (Italian deserts where i had my first cannoli and gelato – I am a fan of both now!!!), and the many, many street vendors.

A new gentleman, by the name of Lennie, joined the boat on Thursday night and we motor-sailed to Barnegat Inlet on the New Jersey coast and then to Atlantic City on Friday and Saturday.  I played craps on Saturday night at Trump’s Taj Mahal and lost $60.  What fun!!!
