Lithuania - Kaunas - Town Hall 1

Well my last blog about my time in Lithuania will be about Kaunas, which I saw on the road trip with my friend from Romania.

Lithuania - Kaunas - castleFirst we saw Kaunas Castle which was built mid-14th century where the rivers Nemunas and Neris met and is the oldest building in Kaunas. Today all that remains of the castle is the moat, one tower, and a wall. Inside the round tower there is a museum that is work visiting.

Lithuania - Kaunas - Town Hall 2Next up was the Kaunas City Hall (cover photo) was built in renaissance style in the mid-16th century, when Kaunas was a flourishing city of merchants, and nowadays is dubbed The White Swan. In 1836 it was reconstructed as a residence for Russian czars. The Wedding Hall (marriage registration office) was opened on the ground and first floors in 1973, which explains why there are so many Lithuania - Kaunas - Town Hall 3women in white dresses around the building, haha. At first I was a bit disappointed with the tour of the city hall, but then we were sent to the attic and it was interesting to see the roof structure. The trip up the clock tower was anti clamatic since you can’t see the view. The best part was when the guy said to take the secret stairs to the basement. The basement was the most interesting part of the tour as they has pottery samples from through out the history of the town, a prison, and other cool things to see.

Lithuania - Kaunas - CathedralThe last thing we stopped in to see before heading out of town was Kaunas Basilica. Being 84 m long and 34 m wide is the largest Gothic (with Renaissance and Baroque elements inside) church in Lithuania. It was first mentioned in writing sources in 1413. The tomb of poet Maironis was constructed in the southern wall of the cathedral in 1930s.

I had a wonderful time in Lithuania in August, but it is now time for me to start writing about where I went next…..Estonia
