Is a trip to the moon the ultimate travel destination?

Apollo 11

You may be wondering why I am writing about the moon on a travel and cruising website. Well the answer is two part. First, today marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and second isn’t the moon the most exclusive travel destination in history? I mean only 24 people have ever flown to the moon and of them only 12 have ever set foot on ground that was not the Earth.

On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down, while Michael Collins orbited overhead, and with the words “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” marking the day man landed on the moon. Over 600 million people all over the world (14% of the world population) watched as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and stated “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” To me the most amazing part is that all of this was done with less computer capabilities than a tenth of a percent of today’s phones. Here is a fun article talking about it and a YouTube video show how impressive the computers on Apollo 11 really were.

Would you be surprised to know that this is not the first man made item to touch the moon? That distinction belongs to Lunik (Luna) 2, a satellite the Soviets crash landed into the Moon almost ten years earlier on September 13, 1959, thus becoming the first man made object to reach another celestial body.

To Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, the rest of the Apollo astronauts, and the hundreds of thousands people that made it possible congratulations on your astonishing achievement. You guys are the ultimate travelers!!!!!!!!
