I have been telling you about the day I spent walking around Castries, the capital of St Lucia, and last time I told you all about the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The amazing church rests across the street from Derek Walcott Square, which is a public square and park located in middle of town.
The square is bounded by Bourbon, Brazil, Laborie and Micoud Streets with both the church and the Castries Central Library located around the square. On the other sides you will find some wonderful older building that are built in the West Indian style before everything started to be made out of cinder blocks. I found these building to be the best in the whole capital and loved just walking around the whole square.
The square was previously named Place d’Armes and Promenade Square before it was named Columbus Square in 1892. In 1993, it was renamed Derek Walcott Square after the Nobel laureate Derek Walcott, who won the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature.
