The Chicxulub crater is an impact crater that hit just north of, and encompasses part of, the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. The center is located just barely offshore near Chicxulub, Mexico and was formed when a large asteroid 6.2 miles in diameter struck the Earth. The inpact happened over 65 million years ago and is the extenction level event that caused the dinosaurs to be wiped out.
The crater is 93 miles in diameter and 12 miles deep and is the second largest confirmed impact structure on Earth. It was discovered in the late 1970’s when two geophysicists, Antonio Camargo and Glen Penfield, were looking for petroleum in the Yucatán Peninsula.
Due to prehistoric importance of this event to Earth’s history it is now a World Heritage Site. Make sure you watch the video below to learn even more about this amazing site!
