Our view of town as we sailed away
This whole week I have been telling you about our adventure since leaving Rodney Bay and the day ended in spectacular fashion with a waterfall outside Canaries. We started off by anchoring a third of a mile north of the fishing village in a cliff lined bay. We ended up tying the dinghy to the pier with a stern anchor, but if there was any swell it would have been better to pull it up the steep beach.
Ashore Canaries is a fishing village and get little tourism as far as I can tell. It was around 3:30 in the afternoon and not the best time to start this two-and-a-half-mile walk, but that is what we did. walking until the dirt/concrete road ends. You will go up, up, and up until you crest the hill and then down steeply, but not for too long. Before you cross the bridge you might want to check out the local bakery, because I got some delicious treats that we enjoyed at the waterfall. Also, you will probable run into Morgan after the bridge. He owns the land the waterfall is on, charges $10 EC (about $4 US) for entry, and speaks with a south London accent. I tell you this because I do not want you to be alarmed if he approaches requesting payment.
Once you make it to the waterfall I recommend you walk up the stairs Morgan has created and see it from the top first. After this you can go back down continue to the middle of the falls. There is a precarious short hidden trail that will let you off on a nice flat area. The waterfall is not as picturesque as the one outside Anse la Raye that I told you about on Tuesday, but this one was way more fun. There are six or so different waterfalls along a stretch of twisty river that is a couple hundred yards long. Each waterfall has a small pool below it and some are over 7 feet deep. I loved swimming, climbing, and exploring each waterfall and we had the entire place to ourselves.

The only thing I recommend is head up around 9am or so instead of at 4pm like we did. The reason is twofold. First, the lighting is better as the sun is overhead and penetrates the treetops and second, so you do not have to rush to get back to town before the sun sets on you completely. For the record we did make it, but just barely! ????
