Battered but not sunk

St Martin - Wrecked Pirate Ship

During my dinghy tour of Simpson Lagoon on St Martin that I told you about yesterday I came across this old pirate ship anchored in the middle of the large lagoon. I know it is not a real pirate ship and was probably used for tourist, but it looked quite eerie floating by itself.

I found it to be a good representation of the aftermath of Hurricane Irm and Marie in 2017. While I saw plenty of damage and lots of boats crushed ashore, I also saw lots of rebuilding happening. Therefore this old, damaged ship was a metaphor for me about how St Martin, and the rest of the Caribbean for that matter, have handled life post hurricane…..They have been battered and beaten, but they are not sunk and will pick up the pieces and move on. đŸ™‚
