Dad In Town

By October 31, 2010 No Comments

We rented a car and picked my dad up from the airport.  On Tuesday we went to the historic triangle and saw Jamestown (the first permanent English settlement), Williamsburg (preserved to early 1700’s), and Yorktown (decisive Revolutionary War battle site).  Mine and my dad’s favorite thing was Yorktown where you can still see the earthworks built by the British and George Washington’s forces.

On Wednesday we started heading south through the Dismal Swamp.  I was going to dock for the night next to the feeder ditch and dingy up it to get into the lake, but the Corp Of Engineers were dredging all night and told us we should keep moving (of course they waited until dark and we had to motor an hour without being able to see well).  In the morning we visited the Visitor Center and then went to Elizabeth City.

I was looking forward to mango truffles from the chocolate store, but they were out.  WHAT!?!?!  The city provides free dock space for cruisers and even threw us a party.  It is a great town to visit.

On Saturday we left to head to Manteo on Roanoke Island (site of the first English colony attempt).  The predicted wind did not materialize so we had to motor, but we got here in time for my dad to be able to see the Missouri football game.
