Why Salt Pond Bay is my favorite anchorage in the entire Virgin Islands

By April 23, 2017 No Comments

Many people ask me what is my favorite anchorage in the Virgin Islands. They are expecting me to list one from the BVI, and are surprised when I say Salt Pond Bay on the south side of St John.

The reasons for this are:

  • It is super quite since you have to pick up a mooring ball and there are only five available.
  • The beach is superb. Plus, since it is a hike to get to you get less of a crowd and the people that are there are not your cruise ship drinking group.
  • The snorkeling is good. There are always a couple turtles in the bay and the point to Blue Cobblestone Bay is spectacular.
  • Two great hikes. The first one is a third of a mile over flat ground to Drunk Bay. Here people make artwork on the cliff with all the broken pieces of coral, making it well worth the walk. The other hike is out to Ram’s Head where you get a sensational view of St John and the other Virgin Islands.

All of these reasons mean that I can take guest here and everyone can go in separate directions to do whatever activity they really want to do.

I would love to hear which is your favorite anchorage in the Virgin Islands and why? Let’s expand the question to your favorite anywhere and why?
