New England and mast issues

By August 8, 2010 No Comments

This week was all about traveling north to Nantucket.  We sailed 40-60 miles a day and stayed the night at Ocean City, NJ, Manasquan Inlet, Fire Island Inlet (very pretty), Shinnecock Inlet, and Block Island.

About 10 miles from Block Island I noticed the boom was pulling away from the mast.  I secured it and used the motor the rest of the way.  Block Island is a very nice island with a well protected (but deep) anchorage.  It is more of a summer get away type of place and had no real yards to do work, so the next morning we motored to Newport, RI.

Chase (he crewed for me from Caya Costa to Ft Lauderdale) was in town and his new boss recommended a shop, but they can not get to me until Monday, so Melissa and I walked around town and got groceries.

I also did the cliff walk, which is a 3.5 mile hike along the eastern shore.  Along the walk you get to see old, historic mansions.  The first half of the hike was on a nice path and the southern half was cool, but you have to go over rocks and such.
