POTD - Portugal - Lisbon - Igreja do Carmo

Back in 1755 an earthquake off the coast of Portugal registered 8.5-9 on the Richter scale it killed 15-20% of the population in Lisbon and destroyed 85% of the existing structures.

This church was one of those buildings. The roof came completely down. At various times there was talk of repairing it and the building did get used after that time, but now it is a monument to that devastating day.
