A race to Annapolis

By September 5, 2010 No Comments

On Sunday I decided to bike 14 miles round trip in order to see Lucy the Elephant. This is a six story building built in 1881. It was a fun side trip, but my butt hurt for a couple of days from the bike seat.

On Monday we only went 35 miles to Cape May, because it is the entrance to the Delaware Bay. Everyone I talked to said it was a cute town, but no one told us about anything to do. The architecture was nice, there was a shopping area, and the fire department had a great exhibit of their old truck, but the town was not worth us staying an extra day.

So, on Tuesday we left at low tide and had a current with us all the way up the Bay and through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal (C&D). We stayed at the free dock ($15 for electricity) in Chesapeake City. Right by the dock there is a great and cheap Italian Ice shop. Lennie and I visited the Canal Museum and saw the original pump, wheel, and building for the old canal locks. The town was cooler than Cape May, but if you want to do ANYTHING before 11AM this is not the town for you.

We left at noon on Wednesday (I had to get more Italian Ice before we left 🙂 ) and headed down the Chesapeake Bay. We stopped at Worton Creek for the night, which turns out to be the location of my ASA 103 class several years ago. That night it seemed as though the rigging was under attack by these little birds for about 30 minutes.

We arrived in Annapolis around 2PM on Thursday and Lennie took me to lunch after we found an anchorage in Spa Creek. His wife picked him up that night. The next afternoon he picked me up and I stayed at his house and did laundry. They took me to have my first crab cake.

I will be spending the next month and a half in the Annapolis area working on the boat and waiting for the boat show.

To those who were worried about us and Hurrican Earl please note we never had any effects from it and were quite a ways from it by the time it got near the Jersey coast.  We even took our time from New York and Annapolis, but your concern was much appriciated though.  Thank you.
